Masked in mystery and draped in decadence, the 13th Annual Catkins Ball is back, after two years of unfortunate cancellations, and will be as glamorous as ever! The Catkins Ball is an annual fundraising event held by The Community Foundation of San Saba County. Proceeds from ticket sales and the auctions assist the city and county in revitalization projects designed to make San Saba an attractive destination for historical tourism.

Beautification Projects

In 2006, city officials and local residents formed The Community Foundation of San Saba County (SSCCF) to undertake restoration and beautification projects in the area. Two year later, the organization hosted the first annual Catkins Ball. The goal was simply to throw a big party so that people would have a good time and come back to San Saba. SSCCF members soon realized the generosity of attendees and over time the fundraiser became the focus of the evening. Proceeds from the annual Catkins Ball now serve as the primary funding for beautification and restoration projects throughout San Saba such as the renovation of the historic Estep-Burleson Building , the San Saba Garden Club in Mill Pond Park and the San Saba Appraisal District Building. Proceeds were also the primary source of funding for the new, modernized visitor center in the heart of our downtown.

Live Auction

Money is raised from an impressive collection of live and silent auction items. This year, there are over 100 items to bid on, which can be done online, allowing even those not attending the event to participate in the silent auction. Hot ticket items this year include dinner certificates, vacation rentals, antique furniture, helicopter rides, YETI coolers, golf clubs, and even Dallas Cowboys tickets. Browse the full selection of auction items here. Additional items are auctioned live at the event, such as a pair of adorable fluffy puppies. Other fundraising opportunities take the form of raffle tickets and simple donations, but any contribution is greatly appreciated! In 2017, the Catkins Ball raised $108,432 and two years later, that total jumped to over $150,000 in proceeds. So not only do guests know how to have a good time, but they have proven to be extremely generous in the effort to keep San Saba beautiful.

The Grand Masquerade

Every year, guests look forward to the unique theme of the Catkins ball. Taking place amongst the beautiful scenery in Risien Park, the event decorations are always quite the spectacle! In 2019, fire dancers and floral shirts celebrated the “Aloha” theme, preceded by equally festive themes of “Paint the Town Red,” “Buckles and Bling,” “A Night in Old Havana,” and “Kentucky Derby.” This year guests were thrilled by the announcement of the “Grand Masquerade” theme, equal parts and refined and enchanting. So press your tuxes, zip up your formal gowns, and throw on the heels, but don’t forget to conceal your identity behind a mask because this Saturday will be an evening of lavish mystery.

Entertainment

With surprise fire dancers and casino games present at previous events, the standard for Catkins entertainment is set pretty high, but this year’s lineup will surpass all expectations. Guests will arrive to an open bar and gourmet horderves. Then after dinner is served, a special performance of Phantom of the Opera will take the stage, followed by a spectacular aerialist show! The party will continue late into the night with more casino games and live music from Branded Heart – a band composed of five veterans of the Central Texas music scene. Needless to say, you can plan on having a good time at the Grand Masquerade!
