It’s not always the grandest of gestures that mean the most. Valentine’s Day ushers forth expectations of roses, chocolates and other cliché norms. To be fair, they are cliché for a reason – who doesn’t love chocolate? But, they just don’t really offer that extra meaningful zhush. If you’re looking for something a little more heartfelt than flowers and candy for your sweetheart this year, why not plan a getaway to the top of the Hill Country?

We wear our small-town love stories proudly. Why? Our romances are anything but small. We know how to keep the fires burning without the distractions of city life. Thanks to a slower pace of life (evidenced by the town’s single stoplight), San Saba offers two of the best gifts – peace and presence. We take full advantage of these – choosing to focus on quality time together, building a foundation from solid roots, and taking pleasure in life’s simple pleasures. This year, we invite you to spend a weekend unplugged away from the city. Indulge in some much-needed relaxation and a few unexpected creature comforts as you write your own love story!

Here’s what we have in mind.

Reserve a room at the boutique Dofflemyer Hotel. Trust us (and Texas Monthly) when we say that the beds are so comfortable, you might not leave them! With dreamy linens and plush mattresses, you’re in for the ultimate in comfort. If you’re a hard-working parent, then sleeping in might just be the best present you can give each other!

When you, somewhat grudgingly, tear yourselves out of bed it’ll inevitably be for sustenance. Good news, you don’t have to go too far for an excellent breakfast. Oliver & Co. is just down the stairs from the hotel. Indulge in a homemade quiche, pastries and Belgian waffles for breakfast or great sandwiches, crisp salads, and snacks like pimento cheese and gourmet charcuterie boards. Still hungry? Dive into the house-churned ice creams or a slice of bourbon pecan pie (or both!)

We won’t judge you in the least if you want to head back to your cloud bed and curl up with a book. But if you find yourself itching to move a little bit, San Saba has some great ways to kill a few hours. Stroll through downtown and pop into our unique shops for an impromptu gifting sesh. Harry’s Boots usually has Valentine’s Day specials on boots and a custom hat operation for his-and-hers hats! Don’t miss the wonderful ladies of J.C. Campbell & Co. Mercantile who always have treasures galore to explore.

Bring your clubs and take a cart out for a round of golf at our lovely San Saba River Golf Course. Not a golfer? Head out for a leisurely walk through the beautiful acres of Risien and Mill Pond parks. If you’re keen for a drink or two, head over to the wineries. Spend the afternoon sipping wines from Wedding Oak Winery and Old Man Scary Cellars. Be sure to pick up a bottle or two to enjoy back at the Dofflemyer over a card game or enjoy a picnic in the park!

Love lives at the Wedding Oak

Want to really infuse your trip with some warm fuzzies? Drive five minutes down County Road 200 and you’ll find the majestic Wedding Oak tree. The historic oak has been a ceremonial marriage site for centuries, dating back to Indians and early San Saba settles. It’s legendary for its love-filled grace. How can you incorporate it into a romantic weekend? Get a copy of your original vows and bring your love out for a vow affirmation. Or, come up with a list of the ways you’re thankful for your partner. Seal your speech with a kiss under the ancient leaves. Maybe it’s time to get on one knee and make her your wife! Or put on your song and have a dance under the beautiful oak. Regardless of what gesture you make, a visit is sure to tug the heart strings and inspire love for years to come!
