The Best Boutique Hotel in the Texas Hill Country

In 2015, a prominent San Saba native named Clay Nettleship renovated the historic W.C. Dofflemyer building bringing San Saba her first boutique hotel. The renovation leverages the structure’s beautiful bones, highlighting its novel turn-of-the-century architecture. Now, the namesake boutique inn now boasts six luxurious rooms blending rustic charm and simplicity. The Dofflemyer offers resplendent elegance in a perfect paradox of past meets present. It’s the perfect place to stop for a sleepover on the Texas road.

The building dates back to 1913 when it was built by W.C. Dofflemyer to house the San Saba National Bank. After the bank’s completion, the upstairs rooms (the ones that now host travelers) were home to the San Saba Club. Outfitted with pool and billiard tables, a piano, a parlor and a reading room, The San Saba Club was the gentlemen’s social club of the day. The building has now come full circle – once more offering the ultimate in leisurely respite.

Small Charms and Big Comfort

The delight is in the details and – at the Dofflemyer – details abound. With five rooms and one suite, the hotel, occupying the former social club space on the second floor, packs incredible ambiance and first-class accommodation into its boutique space. Delight in the marble bathrooms, divine showers (trust us), and accents like local pecans, artisan soaps and comfy robes. The world-class beds are pure divinity. Soft beds and cool linens cocoon you, coaxing away stress and inviting instant relaxation.

Though they might entice you to stay in your room forever, you’re in the heart of downtown San Saba – there’s wine to drink, parks to explore and delicious food. The Dofflemyer is the perfect base to explore all that San Saba county has to offer. Don’t worry, life moves slowly here in San Saba. We also [strongly] encourage hitting the snooze button and taking a big ole’ break.

Pro-tip: Grab breakfast, lunch or a cheese tray at Oliver & Co. located directly underneath the hotel. The bright space serves up fresh breakfasts, gourmet coffee, soups and sandwiches, homemade confections and ice cream and variations of the town staple – pecans. Plan ahead for the evening and enjoy one of their to-go charcuterie boards with a bottle of wine on the patio.

Road-wired

Now that many of us can work from whichever home base we choose, a midweek city break is an option for the stir-crazy folk! (Ahem, you’ve got our number there.) You might not think of connectivity when you think of rural respite, but here you can have it all! San Saba is equipped with high-speed fiber broadband throughout the town.

Thanks to CTTC, our incredible rural telecommunications co-op, we can offer Wi-Fi at the Doff. In fact, the hotel’s main operations are powered by the internet! Each room has a working desk, but if you need a pick-me-up – head down to Oliver & Co. to work in the airy cafe with a fresh coffee!

Safety & Experience

Safety and health are paramount to the Dofflemyer and all cleaning procedures exceed CDC recommendations. Masks are encouraged in common areas. Also, a unique Dofflemyer feature – state-of-the-art keyless entry – decreases person-to-person transmission. The digital check-in process, powered by San Saba’s CTTC high-speed fiber, is swift and easy. The day prior to arrival, guests receive a unique code granting them access to both their room and the hotel’s main entry. The keyless entry also means that check-out is as easy as closing the door behind you without having to speak to a concierge!

“The Dofflemyer is unique in that nearly all of our operations are handled virtually,” says owner Clay Nettleship. “So the reliable, fast service that CTTC provides is crucial to our success. Plus, AT&T being the only reliable cellular provider in the area, CTTC’s fiber ensures that our guests have access to WiFi to stay connected to work or their family on the road.”

Plan ahead, or don’t!

Though the Doff is a great spontaneous stop for a night of rest and relaxation on longer Texas road trips, it’s also recommended to book ahead if you know you want a weekend in San Saba. As you might expect from a boutique hotel with six rooms, the Dofflemyer books up quickly. This is especially true on the weekends during the spring and fall and around San Saba’s holiday events.
