San Saba Receives Five “Keep Texas Beautiful” Awards in June 2017
This past week, we were honored to join Keep Texas Beautiful for their 50th Annual Keep Texas Beautiful Conference in San Antonio, Texas. There we gratefully accepted awards that our amazing Keep San Saba Beautiful and community volunteers earned over the past year.
San Saba is one of 10 winners of Keep Texas Beautiful’s 2017 Governor’s Community Achievement Awards (GCAA) for outstanding overall efforts to beautify our community. The award is one of the most coveted annual environmental and community improvement honors in Texas. San Saba receives first place in its population category, earning a landscape award of $110,000. Funds will go to landscaping and sidewalk beautification projects at the new visitor center which opens later this year. This is the second award of $110,000 for San Saba. In 2012, we received our first Governor’s Community Achievement Award. The improvement funds were used to improve our beloved courthouse on the downtown square.
San Saba also earned the 2017 Keep Texas Beautiful Government Award for a city under 30,000 (first place) and the 2017 Keep Texas Beautiful Gold Star Affiliate Award. Lastly, San Saba received the Sustained Award of Excellence 2014-2017 which requires a score of 90 percent or higher for three consecutive years. San Saba ISD also earned top school district in Texas and our century-old newspaper, the San Saba News & Star, received third place in the newspaper category.
These awards are only made possible by the fine folks who take the time to clean, beautify, educate and promote community involvement to better our surroundings and environment. Thank you for your commitment to keeping San Saba beautiful. Your efforts are what makes our wonderful community at the top of the Hill Country a true Texas gem for residents and travelers alike.
About Keep San Saba Beautiful | Keep San Saba Beautiful was formed in 2009 to both inspire and educate people on the everyday actions they can take to improve and beautify our community. The award-winning affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful, is a City of San Saba Commission lead by eight board members who are appointed by the city council. The group is a volunteer-based group that promotes events to combat litter, reduce waste, beautify public spaces, and educates students on how their actions impact our surroundings. Ongoing projects include the maintenance of downtown planters, citywide cleanups, recycling competitions, and school education lessons. We also have quarterly city-wide cleanups like the Keep San Saba Beautiful “Don’t Mess With Texas” cleanup.
